People didn't realize that others, besides themselves, were starving and homeless. The few that knew it just plain didn't care. Several would use the excuse "What can I do?" so they didn't have to bother trying to help. Still others would claim that they did contribute to the poor by giving up some of their money. Did these people actually go out into the crime-ridden, run-down towns and hand money over to the ones sleeping in corners on the sidewalks, however? No, they stayed in their safe, comfortable houses and placed a check in another's hand. This individual would promise that the needy would get this money. How would you know this person was telling the truth? You wouldn't, unless you followed to make sure that the transaction occurred. Would anyone want to waste his or her time doing this? He sincerely doubted it. It was much easier to hand something over to someone and say you helped, then to actually go out and do something to aid the people themselves.
